Dramatic decrease in jellyfish appearance in the NW Mediterranean
Jellyfish sightings have decreased more than 50% in comparison with the same period in 2008.
It must be highlighted that the network of jellyfish observers in the NW Mediterranean is also larger this season and more prepared than previous years. The causes of such decrease under study are southern winds in the case of the open water species Pelagia noctiluca, and the violent storms experienced in early 2009 over this area, to what coastal species with a polyp stage are concerned. Several national press releases are focused on this phenomena and mention EOJELLY as one important activity in this field of work. Click here for more information.
